Srinagar, October 10, KDC: Police have recovered a cache of arms, ammunition, grenades and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) from the Mukaam Cherhar forest area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, following a cordon-and-search operation launched on the basis of specific intelligence inputs.
According to a handout issued by Sopore Police, the operation was conducted in the jurisdiction of Police Station Bomai. During the search, a blue barrel and a bag were found concealed beneath a large boulder, prompting the authorities to call in the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) to examine and safely handle the suspected explosive material.
The recovered items included two assault rifles—an AK-47 and an AK-76—along with seven magazines and ammunition, four pistols with four magazines and ammunition, and a multi-grenade launcher (MGL) with five rounds, the police handout said.
Eleven hand grenades and three IEDs fitted with remote controls were also recovered, along with eight detonators, two timers and other material, including a Y-SMS set, prima cords, wires, battery cells and IED-related components.
Police said the recovered material had been taken into possession in accordance with legal procedures and that necessary safety precautions were followed during the operation.
In connection with the recovery, FIR No. 66/2026 has been registered at Police Station Bomai under Sections 13, 18, 20 and 23 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Sections 7/25 of the Arms Act and Section 5 of the Explosive Substances Act, according to the handout.
Further investigation is underway to trace the source and ownership of the cache, identify those allegedly involved in concealing it and determine whether the recovered material has any links to terrorist activities, police said. (KDC)
