Srinagar, Oct 29, KDC : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday announced that the proposed National Law University (NLU) in Jammu and Kashmir is expected to become operational by April next year. He said the university will initially function from rented premises until a permanent campus is established.
Responding to a resolution moved by Bandipora MLA Nizamuddin Bhat in the Legislative Assembly, seeking the establishment of an NLU to promote advanced legal education and research in the Union Territory, Omar informed the House that ₹50 crore had already been sanctioned for the project.
“While the final location has not been decided, we are exploring suitable options. A site at Ompura in Budgam is available and could serve as a temporary campus,” the Chief Minister said, reported news agency Kashmir Dot Com.
Several MLAs, including National Conference legislators Mir Saifullah and Sajjad Shaheen, supported the resolution, emphasizing that the university should be located in Srinagar for its accessibility and importance to students across the region.
However, MLA Sonawari Hilal Akbar Lone moved an amendment proposing that the university be set up in his constituency.
After detailed deliberations, the House passed the resolution, marking a significant step toward establishing Jammu and Kashmir’s first National Law University. (KDC)
