Srinagar, Nov 05, KDC: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has accepted the resignation of Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi as Member of Parliament from the Srinagar parliamentary constituency, with effect from November 3, 2026, leaving the seat vacant.
According to a notification issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Mehdi, an elected member of the 18th Lok Sabha from Srinagar constituency of Jammu and Kashmir, has resigned his seat in the Lower House and his resignation has been accepted by the Speaker with effect from November 3.
With the acceptance of his resignation, the Srinagar parliamentary seat has fallen vacant.
Ruhullah had announced his decision to resign from the Lok Sabha and quit the National Conference (NC) on November 3 while addressing a gathering at Behisht-e-Zehra Park in Budgam on the 26th death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi.
In his resignation letter addressed to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Ruhullah described his decision as voluntary and genuine, invoking Article 101(3)(b) of the Constitution of India and Rule 240 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Lok Sabha.
Ruhullah’s resignation comes after months of differences with the National Conference leadership over several political and ideological issues, including the party’s position on the restoration of Article 370, protection of Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional rights and fulfilment of electoral commitments made during the 2024 Assembly elections.
He had accused the party leadership of failing to honour its promises to the people and indicated that he intended to pursue a political initiative based on principles and involving people committed to bringing change in Jammu and Kashmir.
A three-time MLA from Budgam, Ruhullah was elected to the Lok Sabha from Srinagar in the 2024 general elections on the National Conference ticket. His departure brings an end to his nearly 24-year association with the party. (KDC)
