Srinagar, October 21: Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) on Wednesday clarified that consumers cannot be compelled to purchase additional cables as a condition for smart meter installation, stating that the project provides the necessary installation cables, including additional lengths wherever technically required.
The clarification comes after Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference president and Handwara MLA Sajad Lone alleged that households were being asked to pay between ₹4,000 and ₹5,000 for additional cables to get smart meters installed, placing an extra financial burden on economically weaker families.
In its statement, KPDCL said existing service lines remain the responsibility of consumers under applicable electricity regulations. However, it clarified that the replacement or upgradation of service cables is optional and cannot be made mandatory for installing smart meters.
“No consumer should be compelled to purchase cables or incur unnecessary expenses for smart meter installation,” the corporation said.
KPDCL reiterated its commitment to implementing the smart metering programme in a transparent and consumer-friendly manner.
The corporation also urged consumers to report any instance in which they are allegedly forced to purchase cables or incur unnecessary expenses to the concerned authorities for appropriate action.
