Srinagar, July 19: Moderate rainfall lashed most parts of Kashmir on Sunday, bringing much-needed relief from the intense heatwave that had gripped the Valley over the past several days.
The showers came a day after several weather stations recorded above-normal maximum temperatures, with Srinagar registering 35.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday—the highest maximum temperature recorded in the city so far this year.
The prevailing heatwave had prompted the Jammu and Kashmir Government to extend the ongoing summer vacation for schools in the Kashmir Division and winter zones of Jammu till July 22 as a precautionary measure.
While the rainfall brought down temperatures, it also caused waterlogging in several parts of Srinagar. Roads were inundated and stormwater drains overflowed in localities including Khanyar, affecting vehicular movement and inconveniencing commuters, officials said.
The Meteorological Department has forecast intermittent rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir over the next few days and advised people to remain cautious, particularly in areas vulnerable to flash floods, landslides and waterlogging.
