Srinagar, Jan 03, (KDC): The Jammu & Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Saturday trapped and arrested a clerk of the Tehsil Office Central, Shalteng, Srinagar for demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹2,000 in exchange for allegedly tampering with an official detention record.
According to a statement, ACB received a written complaint in which the complainant alleged that Laiq Ahmad Nath, a clerk deputed in the Tehsil Office Central, Shalteng, had sought illegal gratification of ₹2,000 for erasing the complainant’s preventive detention entry from official registers, recorded earlier under Sections 126/170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) on the orders of a 1st Class Executive Magistrate.
Stating that he was unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached ACB’s Srinagar unit seeking legal action against the accused public servant.
Upon receiving the complaint, the bureau conducted a discreet verification, which confirmed the alleged demand. Subsequently, FIR No. 01/2026 was registered at Police Station ACB Srinagar under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and investigation was formally initiated.
During the probe, ACB constituted a dedicated trap team, which laid a meticulously planned operation. The team intercepted the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting ₹2,000 from the complainant, officials said.
Nath, a resident of Qamarwari, Srinagar, was immediately taken into custody after completion of necessary medico-legal formalities, as per procedure.
A senior ACB official described the arrest as part of the bureau’s zero-tolerance policy against corruption, particularly involving attempts to manipulate official records for personal gain.
Further investigation in the case is underway, the bureau added. (KDC)
