Srinagar, Aug 28, KDC: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, has lauded the people of the Valley for showing resilience and restraint during the recent flood scare, while cautioning that the next fortnight remains critical as monsoon rains continue.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Garg said that the situation is under control with water levels in Jhelum and its tributaries showing a steady decline. He, however, urged people to “stay alert and adhere to official advisories” over the next 10–15 days, describing this phase as decisive in managing the flood threat.
“The calmness and awareness displayed by citizens played a big role in averting panic. Our agencies were on high alert, but it was the cooperation of the people that truly helped us manage the crisis,” he noted.
According to Garg, coordinated efforts of the Army, Police, SDRF, NDRF, and the Irrigation & Flood Control Department ensured that more than 150 vulnerable embankments were kept under watch, with no breaches reported during the past two days.
He also highlighted the improvement at key monitoring stations including Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar and Sangam in Anantnag, where water levels have receded. “This shows that our combined preventive measures and community support are working,” Garg said.
The Divisional Commissioner further invited public participation in shaping long-term flood management strategies, adding that “citizens’ suggestions will be valuable for strengthening preparedness in the years ahead.”
Reassuring that Kashmir remains safe for now, he expressed confidence that continued vigilance and cooperation will help the administration and residents tide over the ongoing monsoon season. (KDC)
