New Delhi: The Press Council of India (PCI) has issued an advisory cautioning against the unauthorized use of the term ‘Press Council’ by various organizations.
The regulatory body, established under the Press Council Act, 1978, stressed that it has no state branches nor has it authorized any entity to operate under its name.
The advisory follows reports of certain press organizations using the term ‘Press Council’ in their names, which PCI states undermines its institutional authority and uniqueness. Citing legal provisions, the council referenced an opinion from the Department of Legal Affairs, stating that such unauthorized usage violates Section 3 read with Entry 7(ii) of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950.
The PCI Secretariat, headquartered at Soochna Bhawan, CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi, urged all concerned parties to refrain from misusing its name to avoid legal repercussions. (KDC)
