SRINAGAR: National Conference (NC) president Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Saturday applauded the banned Jama’at-e-Islami for fielding candidates in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, while dismissing PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti’s accusations of NC’s involvement in poll rigging during the 1987 elections.
“I congratulate Jama’at for stepping out and taking part in the assembly elections. It is a good step,” Dr. Farooq told reporters after paying obeisance at the revered shrine of Sheikh Hamza Makhdoom Sahib (RA) in Srinagar.
Responding to remarks by PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, who accused the NC of rigging the 1987 elections and forcing Jama’at and other political parties to stay away from the polls, Dr. Farooq dismissed the allegations, advising Mehbooba to focus on safeguarding the country instead of engaging in a blame game.
“May Allah keep her (Mehbooba) in good health. Nothing can be achieved by raising fingers; rather, she should focus on safeguarding the country,” Dr. Farooq said.
He emphasized that India is a diverse nation with multiple religions and languages, from Tamil Nadu to Kashmir, and that this diversity must be protected. He added that fostering good relations among Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians is essential for the country’s unity. “If we uphold this principle in Kashmir, it will enlighten the entire country,” he said.
