SRINAGAR: Sarjan Barkati, popularly known as “Azadi Chahcha,” is set to contest the upcoming assembly elections from jail.
According to reports, following the precedent set by jailed politician Er Rashid, whose son Abrar Rashid led his Lok Sabha campaign, Barkati’s nomination form has been filed by his daughter, who will spearhead the election campaign on his behalf.
Barkati gained significant popularity for leading large gatherings and rallies during the 2016 unrest in Kashmir with his distinctive slogans and speeches. On August 28 last year, he was arrested on charges of raising funds and allegedly misusing them for radical activities in Kashmir. (KDC)
