Srinagar 27 May (KDC): J&K Students Association Friday urged Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to increase four supernumerary seats in each course for students from Jammu and Kashmir for admission in prestigious Central Universities of the Country.
In a statement issued here, National Spokesperson of the Association Nasir Khuehami welcomed the decision of Jammu and Kashmir Governor Manoj Sinha who is also Chancellor of the University and Vice Chancellor Prof Nilofar Khan of signing a Memorandum of understanding with Gujarat University. “It is a highly welcoming decision. This is the most needed collaboration of KU with a university outside of the state,” the statement read.
“The Kashmiri students selected by the University of Kashmir will be able to pursue post-graduate degree courses in areas like data analytics, artificial intelligence, horticulture entrepreneurship, and value chain management for free at the Gujarat University’s various departments as well as the new Indian Institute of Sustainability (IIS). Two male & female students each will be shortlisted by the University of Kashmir for the program based on certain criteria. These four students will pursue courses at GU which are not available at the University of Kashmir. These students will not have to pay tuition fees nor pay for the lodging and boarding facilities provided by the Gujarat university” it added.
“Since this is the first such MoU between the two universities and the first collaboration of KU with a central university outside of the Union Territory, it has given a morale booster. We hope, in near future, Kashmir University enters into many tie-ups with foreign universities and universities outside the state which would facilitate collaborations in the form of student and faculty exchange, jointly organised events and research initiatives. This will not only ensure en masse participation of aspiring students in such programs but will also expose the talent pool of Union Territory to the rest of the country,” the statement said.
Speaking further on the issue, the body’s spokesperson Khuehami expressed his deepest sense of gratitude to Chancellor of University of Kashmir Manoj Sinha. “Our motive is to help channelize the energy of youth in a positive direction so that youth of JKUT always contribute towards nation building at large. MoU’s like these, strengthen our resolve to facilitate cultural, educational & intellectual exchange” added Khuehami.
He demanded enhancement of admission quota in various courses in all the central universities and government colleges across the country. He urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to take up matters with concerned stakeholders for enhancement of Admission in all prestigious universities across the Country. “The quota for J&K students in Jamai Milia Islamia, Aligrah Muslim University, Jawahar Lal University , Hyderabad central university, Dehli University, HNB Garhwal Central University and other major universities of country in both UG and PG courses should be increased so that more students of J&K can get opportunity to study in top universities of the country”, he said.
National General Secretary of Association Danish Lone said that, there are many J&K students who are interested in pursuing education in such universities but due to meagre quota for Jammu and Kashmir students they are not able to make it to such universities. We request Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to take up the matter with concerned authorities and hope these genuine demands are fulfilled at the earliest. He said that, reservation of at least 4 seats in merit quota in technical or professional institutions should be made for the Jammu and Kashmir students to compensate what the Union Territory has lost during turbulent times.” added Lone.
Both Khuehami & Lone said that their organization is going to write to concerned quarters in this regard which include the VCs of top Central Universities & Higher Education Ministry as well. (KDC)
