Samba (JK), Apr 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said work is going on at a fast pace in Jammu and Kashmir to give a new impetus to its development.

In his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir since Article 370 was abrogated in 2019, Modi inaugurated or laid foundation stone of projects worth Rs 20,000 crore related to connectivity and electricity at Palli near here.

Addressing gram sabhas across the country on the occasion of Panchayati Raj Day, he said Panchayati Raj institutions strengthen the spirit of democracy.

To give a new impetus to the development of Jammu and Kashmir, work is going on at a fast pace in the Union Territory. These efforts will provide employment to a large number of youths of Jammu and Kashmir, he said.

The prime minister said it is a matter of great pride that at a time when democracy has reached grassroots in Jammu and Kashmir through the panchayati raj system, he was interacting with panchayats across the country.

He said be it democracy or carrying out development, Jammu and Kashmir is presenting a new example these days.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said that the UT’s “70-year-old dream of Ek Vidhan, Ek Nishan, Ek Pradhan (One state, one flag, one Premier) stands fulfilled today under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendera Modi”.

New dimensions of development have been created in Jammu and Kashmir in the last two-three years, he said

LG Sinha made the statement while addressing a rally in Pali area of Samba district after welcoming Prime Minister Narendera Modi, who landed in the district for a day’s visit to the region.

Modi said those who did not get the benefit of reservation for years in Jammu and Kashmir have started getting the benefit of reservation after the abrogation of Article 370.

“It is for the first time that entire India right from J&K to Kanyakumari has one flag and one leader, who is today in front of us, ” Sinha said.

“For the first time, we are seeing a full-fledged three-tier Panchayati raj system in place,” he said. He said that post 1947 “only 15000 Cr investment reached J&K while as today, there are proposals worth Rs 52000 crore with the J&K government of which Rs 38000 Crore investment proposals are being inaugurated by the Prime Minister today”.

“In the next few years, we will achieve the target of Rs 70,000 crore investment and almost 7 to 8 lakh youth will get jobs,” LG Sinha said.

Speaking on the occasion, MoS in PMO Dr Jitendera Singh said that “under the leadership of PM Modi, people of J&K saw real self-rule flourishing in the UT and every segment is flourishing and people reaping peace dividends”.
