Srinagar, Oct 25, KDC: The University of Kashmir has deployed an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered facial biometric verification system for the Jammu and Kashmir State Eligibility Test (JKSET) and Ladakh State Eligibility Test (LASET), with 13,252 candidates appearing in the examination across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on Sunday.

According to a handout issued by the university, the mobile-based application was developed by its Directorate of Information Technology and Support Systems (IT&SS) to assist examination staff in verifying candidates’ identities.

Of the 16,821 candidates registered for the examination, 13,252 appeared, the handout said. More than 700 invigilators and examination personnel used the application at various examination centres.

The system enabled staff to capture candidates’ live photographs along with the geolocation of the verification site. These images were then automatically compared with photographs submitted during the application process, generating matched or unmatched results to assist in identity verification.

The university said the application integrates pre-trained facial recognition models and has a reported accuracy of 99.07 per cent.

“By automating image comparison through a mobile application, the system helped reduce reliance on manual identity checks and supported the efficient verification of candidates during the large-scale examination,” the handout said.

According to the university, the application was deployed on its own Data Centre infrastructure to support simultaneous access by examination personnel working across multiple centres.

The handout said hosting the system on the university’s local infrastructure provided greater institutional control over the processing and handling of examination-related data.

It added that encryption safeguards were employed to protect sensitive information and secure data transmission, with data privacy and information security treated as key considerations in the implementation.

The university described the initiative as part of its efforts to integrate artificial intelligence and in-house technological solutions into institutional processes.

“The adoption of AI-assisted facial verification aims to improve operational efficiency, strengthen examination management and support transparent, reliable and secure candidate identification,” the handout said.

The university added that the deployment demonstrated the potential of AI-enabled systems in examinations involving large numbers of candidates across geographically diverse locations, while highlighting the role of its in-house technical expertise and digital infrastructure. (KDC)
