Srinagar, Oct 1, KDC: Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar on Thursday mourned the passing of Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Yousuf Bhat, former Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine, who passed away on October 1, 2026.

In a condolence message, GMC Srinagar described Prof. Bhat as an “astute physician, accomplished academician, dedicated teacher and a deeply compassionate clinician,” whose contributions to medicine, medical education and patient care would be remembered by generations of students and colleagues.

The institution said Prof. Bhat was known for his distinctive teaching methods, particularly his theory and practical classes, through which he brought clinical medicine into the classroom and helped students understand how to approach patients and think through clinical problems.

“Generations of students and postgraduate trainees who attended his classes continue to remember him for his teaching and the clarity with which he approached medicine,” the handout said.

Prof. Bhat also contributed to medical education in the region through his book on Emergency Medicine and Hypertension, it said.

During his long association with GMC Srinagar, Prof. Bhat served the Department of Medicine with dedication and contributed to the academic and clinical life of the institution. As Head of the Department, he discharged the responsibilities of his office with the experience of a senior clinician and teacher, according to the handout.

In her condolence message, Prof. (Dr.) Iffat Hassan, Principal/Dean, GMC Srinagar, expressed deep sorrow over his demise and conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

Prof. Hassan said his passing had “left a profound void in the institution and amongst his colleagues, students and patients.”

She acknowledged his longstanding contribution to the Department of Medicine and medical education at GMC Srinagar and said he would be remembered “with deep respect, gratitude and affection.”

Faculty members, administrative staff, residents, nursing and allied healthcare staff, students and other supporting staff of GMC Srinagar conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved family and expressed solidarity with them in their hour of grief.

The institution said Prof. Bhat’s legacy would continue to live on in the classrooms, wards and practical sessions where he spent much of his professional life.

“The lessons imparted by a good teacher often outlive the years of his service,” the handout said, adding that Prof. Bhat had left behind lasting memories among his students and colleagues.

His distinguished service to medicine, medical education and patient care would remain part of the institutional memory of GMC Srinagar, it added. (KDC)
