Srinagar, Sept 22, KDC: National Conference (NC) legislator Abdul Majid Larmi on Tuesday demanded restoration of public holidays associated with the birth, death and anniversaries of NC founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, saying that if such holidays were not restored, public holidays commemorating anniversaries of Dogra rulers should also be cancelled.
Larmi’s remarks during the second day of the autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly triggered a war of words between NC and BJP members.
PDP legislator Waheed Para also joined the discussion, demanding restoration of the public holiday observed on July 13 as “Martyrs’ Day”.
The exchange over public holidays and historical figures came amid heightened tensions in the House, with BJP legislators later staging a walkout in protest and demanding answers from the government.
BJP MLA Devyani Rana walked out of the House while raising slogans of “Maharaja Amar Rahe”.
However, BJP legislator Yudhvir Sethi remained in the House to respond to the government’s reply to a question raised by him during Question Hour.
The autumn session has witnessed heated exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches since its commencement, with BJP members raising a range of issues and demanding responses from the government. (KDC)
