Anantnag, August 29: A 35-year-old man from Qaimoh in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district died at a private hospital in Anantnag following kidney stone surgery, prompting his family to allege medical negligence and stage a protest at the hospital.
The deceased was identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Wani, son of Ghulam Nabi Wani. Officials said he had been admitted to Mid City Private Hospital on KP Road in Naibasti, Anantnag, for a procedure related to kidney stones.
According to officials, Wani’s condition was stable after the surgery and he was reportedly doing well on the evening of August 28. His condition, however, deteriorated the following morning, and he died at the hospital.
Following his death, the family members alleged negligence on the part of the treating doctors and held a protest outside the hospital. Police reached the spot and began verifying the circumstances surrounding the death.
Giving the hospital’s account, Dr Zahoor Gilkar said the patient had undergone percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), a procedure used to remove kidney stones. He said Wani was stable after the procedure and had also been started on oral medication.
“He was fine yesterday evening. In the morning, he went for a walk around the ward and collapsed,” Dr Gilkar said, adding that the cause could possibly be an embolism or myocardial infarction.
The doctor said the autopsy report is awaited, which is expected to help establish the cause of death.
Police are ascertaining the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. (With inputs from Agencies)
