Srinagar, Aug 1, KDC: Srinagar Police have cracked a blind murder case within six hours of recovering an unidentified body from the Babademb Canal, arresting a mother-son duo accused of killing a man over a financial dispute before wrapping his body in gunny bags and dumping it into the water to conceal the crime.

According to police, Police Station Khanyar received information on July 30, 2026, about an unidentified body wrapped in gunny bags lying in the Babademb Canal beneath Baba Dawood Khakhi Bridge in Khanyar. Acting swiftly, police registered FIR No. 49/2026 under Sections 103 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation.

Given the gravity of the offence, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted under the supervision of senior officers. Through technical analysis, sustained investigation and corroboration of evidence, the team identified the accused as Haleema Bano and her son Moomin Ahmad, originally residents of Machil in Kupwara and presently living as tenants in Mughal Mohalla, Rainawari.

Police said the victim was identified as Nazir Ahmad Bhat, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, a resident of Kalantpora, Hawal.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Nazir Ahmad Bhat was allegedly murdered inside the rented accommodation of the accused following a financial dispute. After the killing, the accused allegedly wrapped the body in gunny bags and dumped it into the Babademb Canal beneath Baba Dawood Khakhi Bridge in an attempt to destroy evidence and conceal the crime.

Soon after committing the offence, the accused fled Srinagar to evade arrest. However, the investigating team pursued multiple leads and successfully traced and apprehended both accused from the Lolab area of Kupwara within six hours of the body’s recovery.

Police said several incriminating articles connected to the commission of the crime have also been recovered during the investigation.

Further investigation is underway to ascertain whether any other person was involved in the murder and to complete all legal formalities.

Srinagar Police said the swift detection of the blind murder case reflects the professionalism, coordinated efforts and commitment of the investigating team in ensuring that those involved in heinous crimes are brought to justice without delay. (KDC)
