New Delhi, June 30, KDC: Senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit has assumed charge as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), India’s premier internal intelligence agency, succeeding Tapan Kumar Deka.
A 1993-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, Dixit has been appointed for a two-year tenure after serving as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau. With over three decades of experience in intelligence and policing, he is regarded as one of the country’s most seasoned intelligence professionals.
Dixit’s appointment comes at a time when India continues to confront evolving internal security challenges, including terrorism, radicalisation, cyber threats, espionage and cross-border infiltration. His extensive experience within the Intelligence Bureau is expected to provide continuity and strengthen the agency’s operational capabilities.
According to news agency Kashmir Dot Com, Dixit played a pivotal role in intelligence operations in Jammu & Kashmir during one of the region’s most sensitive phases following the abrogation of Article 370. As head of the Intelligence Bureau’s Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Srinagar, he oversaw intelligence operations across Jammu & Kashmir and Leh, coordinating closely with security agencies to maintain stability and counter terror threats.
His tenure in Kashmir was marked by a series of high-profile security and political challenges. He is credited with strengthening coordination among intelligence and security agencies, closely monitoring separatist and militant networks, and contributing to outreach initiatives aimed at encouraging greater participation in the democratic process. Reports also describe him as a skilled negotiator who played an important role in confidence-building efforts in both Kashmir and Ladakh.
Known within intelligence circles for his calm demeanour, strategic thinking and deep understanding of counter-terrorism and internal security, Dixit has handled several sensitive assignments across the country during his distinguished career. Officials believe his extensive field experience will further enhance the Intelligence Bureau’s ability to address emerging security challenges.
As the new IB Director, Mahesh Dixit will lead the country’s principal internal intelligence agency, responsible for gathering and analysing intelligence related to terrorism, extremism, espionage, cyber security and other threats affecting national security. His appointment signals the government’s emphasis on experienced leadership to steer India’s internal security apparatus in an increasingly complex security environment. (KDC)
