Srinagar, June 22, KDC: Heavy rain lashed large parts of Kashmir on Monday, with hailstorms reported from some areas, triggering waterlogging in parts of Srinagar and leading to the death of an elderly woman after she allegedly came into contact with an electric pole in the city’s old quarters.
Several areas across the Valley, including Srinagar city, witnessed intense afternoon showers that brought down the daytime temperature by several degrees. Hailstorms were also reported from parts of Srinagar and south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
The heavy downpour inundated several low-lying localities of old Srinagar, with rainwater accumulating in roads and residential areas. Authorities launched dewatering operations in the affected areas to clear the accumulated water and restore normalcy.
Amid the widespread inundation, a 65-year-old woman, identified as Shameema, wife of late Ghulam Nabi Makdhoomi of Shamspora, allegedly suffered an electric shock after coming into contact with an electric pole near Rangar Masjid in the Naidkadal area. She was immediately shifted to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Police have taken cognizance of the incident and initiated proceedings. The incident has raised concerns over public safety during periods of waterlogging, particularly in densely populated areas where electric installations are located close to pedestrian routes. (KDC)
