SHOPIAN, APRIL 30: International Labour Day was today observed at Government Degree College (GDC) Shopian, with a focus on the dignity, rights, and welfare of the labour class.

Assistant Labour Commissioner Shopian, Dr. Nida Yousuf, while addressing the gathering, highlighted the significance of Labour Day as a tribute to the invaluable contributions of workers across all sectors, including construction, industries, and services.

She emphasized that the day is dedicated to recognising the efforts of labourers and ensuring that their dignity is upheld in society.

Dr. Nida also elaborated on the role of the Labour Department in safeguarding workers’ rights and ensuring their welfare through various schemes and legal provisions. She stressed that the department remains committed to improving working conditions and extending financial and social support to registered labourers.

Deputy LADC, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Shopian, Dawood Khan, spoke about the role of DLSA in addressing labour related grievances. He highlighted that the authority plays a crucial role in resolving disputes, providing legal assistance, and ensuring justice for the labour class. He informed that issues related to labour disputes can be reported through the toll free helpline number 15100.

District Information Officer Shopian, Showkat Hussain Ganie, while speaking on the occasion, underlined the importance of maintaining dignity and respect for every worker and employee. He stated that empathy and human concern must precede legal frameworks in ensuring justice and harmony in society.

The programme also featured awareness on the ongoing ‘Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyan’. Speakers emphasized the need for youth to focus on education and career and highlighted the role of parents and teachers in guiding them away from substance abuse.

Officials from the Labour Department detailed various labour laws, including the Payment of Wages Act and the Gratuity Act, explaining how these provisions protect workers’ rights and ensure financial security. They also highlighted the J&K Building and Other Construction Workers (JKBOCW) Welfare Scheme, including its registration process, eligibility criteria, and benefits.
