New Delhi, Mar 11: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday termed the opposition’s resolution seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla as unfortunate, saying such a move raises questions about the tradition and credibility of parliamentary democracy.
Replying to a two-day debate on the opposition resolution in the Lok Sabha, Shah said the Speaker functions as a neutral custodian of the House, representing both the ruling party and the Opposition.
“This is not ordinary. After about four decades, a no-confidence motion against the Lok Sabha Speaker has been brought. It is unfortunate for parliamentary politics and this House,” Shah said.
He emphasised that the functioning of the House is based on mutual trust and established rules, adding that members are expected to conduct themselves accordingly.
“This House is not a marketplace; members are expected to speak and participate in proceedings according to its rules and procedures,” he said.
Shah criticised the opposition, stating that questioning the role of the Speaker undermines the foundation of India’s democratic institutions.
“The Constitution has given the role of a mediator to the Speaker. By casting suspicion on the mediator, the Opposition has questioned the deep-rooted reputation of our democracy,” he said.
The Home Minister also pointed out that despite being in the opposition for many years, the BJP or the NDA had never moved a no-confidence motion against the Speaker.
According to reports, more than 42 members participated in the debate during the two-day discussion in the Lok Sabha. (Agencies)
