Srinagar, Nov 14, KDC: Casualties are feared after a massive late-night blast rocked Nowgam Police Station at around 11:20 pm on Friday, sources told news agency Kashmir Dot Com (KDC).
Officials told news agency Kashmir Dot Com (KDC) , the explosion occurred when a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, along with police personnel and the local Tehsildar, was inspecting a large quantity of ammonium nitrate that had been seized earlier in a high-profile inter-state terror network case. The material was part of an ongoing investigation into a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) module operating across multiple states.
The wider probe, described by police as a “white-collar terror ecosystem,” has revealed the involvement of radicalised professionals and students connected via encrypted channels with suspected foreign handlers. So far, seven key operatives—among them two doctors, Dr. Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie and Dr. Adeel—have been arrested for their alleged roles in fundraising, logistics, and procurement of arms, ammunition, and IED components. Over 2,900 kg of explosives, chemicals and arms were seized during searches across Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. Some of the material was also linked to the deadly car bomb blast near Delhi’s Red Fort on November 10, which claimed at least 10 lives and injured 20 others.
Sources said the Nowgam blast took place during the sampling and inspection process of the seized ammonium nitrate. The explosion caused extensive damage inside the station, destroying several vehicles in the parking area, sending debris across the compound, and shattering windowpanes in nearby homes, including parts of Rawalpora. Thick smoke could be seen rising from the site moments after the blast.
While the exact number of casualties has not yet been officially confirmed, multiple injuries among members of the inspection team are feared. All the injured were immediately shifted to hospitals. No civilian casualties have been reported so far.
“This is not a terror attack but an accidental detonation during the handling of sensitive material,” officials said, adding “It’s a very unfortunate incident.”
Emergency teams, including fire and rescue services, were rushed to the spot, and the area has since been secured for further examination. (KDC)
