Srinagar, Oct 6, KDC: The higher reaches of Kashmir, including Gulmarg, Gurez, and other mountainous regions, witnessed the season’s first snowfall this week, marking the early arrival of winter in the Valley.
Fresh snow blanketed several high-altitude areas such as Affarwat in Gulmarg, Sinthan Top in Anantnag, Zojila Pass, Gumri, Minimarg, and Razdan Top — the gateway to Gurez Valley in Bandipora district. Light snowfall began early Monday morning at Razdan Top, leading to a noticeable dip in temperatures across upper regions. However, officials confirmed that traffic movement on the Bandipora–Gurez road remains open.
According to the Meteorological Department, a fresh western disturbance is expected to bring more rain and snow across parts of Jammu and Kashmir from October 5 to 7. Light rainfall was also reported in Srinagar and adjoining areas, with intermittent showers recorded across the plains of north and south Kashmir, reported news agency Kashmir Dot Com
The change in weather has brought joy to locals and tourists alike, who welcomed the first signs of the approaching winter season. Authorities, however, have urged commuters and travelers to exercise caution, especially in higher reaches where roads may turn slippery due to falling temperatures.
The Razdan Pass, often referred to as the gateway to Gurez Valley, witnessed a fresh white cover of snow on Monday, adding scenic charm to the landscape while signaling the start of the cold season. Officials from the district administration said that while vehicular movement has not been disrupted yet, the situation is being closely monitored.
“We are continuously observing the Razdan stretch to ensure road safety. Any adverse change in weather may force a temporary closure to prevent accidents,” a senior official said.
The early snowfall has also raised hopes among tourism stakeholders, who anticipate an increase in visitor footfall as winter destinations like Gulmarg and Gurez begin to transform into snow-covered attractions. (KDC)
