New Delhi: Former Delhi captain Mithun Manhas is set to make history as the first person from Jammu & Kashmir to become president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Manhas filed his nomination in Mumbai on Sunday and is expected to be elected unopposed at the board’s annual general meeting (AGM) on September 28.
The 45-year-old cricketer, who moved to Delhi after representing J&K at the U-16 level, will also be the first uncapped player to hold the top post in Indian cricket. His ascension comes after a dramatic turn of events during a high-profile meeting in New Delhi on Saturday night, where BCCI officials ensured a cricketer occupies the leadership position.
Manhas, a shrewd operator in cricketing circles, has played 157 first-class matches and captained Delhi alongside international stars like Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. He has also represented IPL teams including Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors, and Chennai Super Kings, and worked as assistant coach for Gujarat Titans.
The decision marks a historic milestone for cricket in Jammu & Kashmir, giving the Union Territory its first representative at the helm of India’s premier cricket board.
