Srinagar, Aug 25 (KDC): Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday staged a protest in Srinagar demanding the release of prisoners lodged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), with party president Mehbooba Mufti describing the issue as a matter of “humanity” rather than politics.
Addressing reporters during the demonstration, Mehbooba, as per Kashmir Dot Com, said many of those imprisoned come from poor families who cannot afford legal battles. “We wanted to hold a protest today for the innocent people jailed in Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere, especially those whose parents are not capable enough of fighting a case,” she said.
She urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take up the issue with the Union Home Minister. “If the innocent cannot be released, they should at least be jailed in Jammu and Kashmir,” the PDP chief stressed.
Raising concern over the plight of families, she added: “Poor people cannot go to court. Who looks after them when they are ill? Who would listen to them? This is not about politics; it is about humanity.”
The PDP reiterated its demand for an urgent review of cases to ensure justice for what it called the “innocent and voiceless.” (KDC)
