Fresh Snowfall in Higher Reaches, Rains Lash Plains; MeT Predicts Wet Spell Till Weekend

SRINAGAR, Mar 11: Wet weather continued in the Kashmir Valley with fresh snowfall covering several higher reaches, including the ski resort of Gulmarg, while intermittent rains lashed the plains over the past 24 hours.

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar forecast wet weather is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir till the weekend.

Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley lashed by intermittent rains leading to drop in the temperature and disrupting the normal activities.
Some higher reaches in Kashmir valley including the ski resort of Gulmarg received light snowfall during the past 24 hours. In the Union Territory of Ladakh, Leh, Kargil, Drass, Padum, Stakna, Tangste, Khalite and Chuchot also received light snowfall during the period.
Giving parameters of rainfall, the MeT office said that the highest precipitation was recorded at Kupwara 12.0mm of rainfall, followed by Pahalgam 11.8mm, Kokernag 10.4mm, Gulmarg 10.2mm, Srinagar 7.8mm and Qazigund 6.8mm during the past 24 hours.

The Met office said the weather is likely to remain cloudy today with the possibility of intermittent light to moderate rain or snow at isolated to scattered places, while another spell of light to moderate rain and snow at many places during March 12 and 14. Intermittent light to moderate rain/Snow at many places during March 15 and 16.

The weather is likely to remain dry from March 17 to 21, the MeT office said.

The MeT office has also issued an advisory for travellers, tourists and transporters to follow admin/traffic advisory before planning their trip during the period.

The farmers have also been advised to suspend farm operations from March 10 onwards till March 18, besides people living on the higher reaches have been asked to avoid sloppy and avalanche prone areas during the period.

Meanwhile, the night temperature dropped but recorded 2 to 5°C above the average at many weather stations of Kashmir. The day recorded on Monday also slipped down by several degrees below normal in most weather stations of the Kashmir valley.

The maximum temperature recorded in Srinagar was 3.7°C below normal of 14.7°C on Monday.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar was recorded at 5.6°C during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. This was 2.3°C above the average for the place during this period of the season.

Ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a low of 0.5°C and this was 4.5°C above the average for the place during this period of the season while Pahalgam had a low of 2.6°C and Kokernag 4.2°C, the MeT office said.
