SRIANAGAR: In a significant development, two senior Jammu and Kashmir Police Service (JKPS) officers, each with 22 years of service and top seniority, are expected to be inducted as Inspectors General of Police (IGPs) soon. Additionally, six JKPS officers with 18 years of service may be promoted as Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) without being inducted into the Indian Police Service (IPS).
Sources informed that the proposal for these inductions had initially been cleared during the tenure of the BJP-PDP coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir. However, it was not implemented at the time as the final approvals were pending. Now, it appears that the proposal is being finalized and is likely to be executed in the coming months.
The eight JKPS officers in question are from the 1999 batch, which has several officers who were not inducted into the IPS, despite their seniority. According to experts, officers who opt for this path will have the flexibility to either apply for this cadre or pursue the traditional IPS induction route.
Experts further explained that this cadre is particularly appealing to officers who wish to avoid postings outside Jammu and Kashmir under the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories) cadre. They would still receive the ranks, salaries, and pensionary benefits equivalent to those of IGPs and DIGs, providing a viable alternative to IPS induction.
