Srinagar, Dec 03, KDC: In order to finalize the Draft Factual Report regarding Doodhganga, a meeting of the Joint Committee constituted by National Green Tribunal (NGT) was held here today at Meeting Hall of DC Office Complex Srinagar.

Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Asad, Commissioner SMC, Athar Amir Khan, Director Urban Local Bodies, Mathura Masoom, Regional Director CPCB Chandigarh, Suneel Dave, Regional Director, Pollution Control Committee Kashmir, Rafi Ahmad Bhat, Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Superintendent Engineer UEED and other concerned participated in the meeting.

During the meeting, the Committee held detailed deliberations with regard to the directions of National Green Tribunal(NGT) which, in an order in OA No. 241/2021, constituted a five-member Committee for submission of a factual report to the Tribunal in terms of taking remedial action for preventing discharge of sewage and dumping of solid waste on the banks of Doodhganga River and Mamath Kull, to assess the water quality, quantity of sewage discharge, solid waste being dumped on the banks of Doodhganga River and to review the measures being taken for its cleanliness, besides identification of the factors contributing to pollution of this river as per the directions of  National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The Committee recommended taking remedial measures for augmentation of sewerage and drainage system along the Doodhganga, besides steps to be taken for segregation of sewerage and drainage inflow/out flow mechanism to improve the water quality in Doodhganga.

On the occasion, the Committee also observed that quantification of sewerage and drainage system be done by the UEED and SMC within weeks’ time. The committee members also suggested imposing an immediate ban on illegal mining around Doodhganga, particularly mechanized mining. (KDC)
