Srinagar, Oct 01, KDC: A cricketer turned militant has been killed in an encounter that breaks out between militants and Security forces in Rakhama village in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Friday morning.
An official told news agency Kashmir Dot Com (KDC), that a joint team of Police, army and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation on specific information about the presence of militants in the area.
He said that as the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them which was retaliated , triggering an encounter.
A senior police officer told Kashmir Dot Com (KDC) that one unidentified militant has been killed; however sources identified the militant as Mujeeb Lone son of Mohammad Amin, a resident of Redwani Badla Kulgam.
Mujeeb, a cricket player joined militant ranks in the month of September 2021 and within a month he was killed in today’s encounter in Shopian district.
Police late evening in a statement to KDC said that on October 01 Today at about 0500hrs based on specific input generated by Police regarding presence of militants in village Rakhama area of Shopian, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 34RR and 178Bn CRPF in the said area.
During the search operation, as the presence of militant got ascertained he was given opportunity to surrender, instead he fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter.
In the ensuing encounter, one militant identified as Mujeeb Lone son of Mohd Amin Lone resident of Redwani Bala Kulgam was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter.
As per police records, he had joined the militant folds recently and was linked with proscribed militant outfit LeT. He was responsible for creating terror among the locals and had been coercing innocent citizens to sympathise with anti-national elements.
Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition including one pistol, 01 magazine were also recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes.
People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any.
