BANDIPORA, OCTOBER 15: Government Degree College (GDC) Ajas today organised an inter-college seminar on the theme “Gandhian Thoughts in the 21st Century: Peace, Ethics, Democracy and Sustainable Development” to mark Gandhi Jayanti.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Bandipora, Indu Kanwal Chib presided over the programme as the Chief Guest, while Prof. Mohd. Students and faculty members from Government Degree College Sumbal and Government Degree College Hajin also participated in the event.

On the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner, released the College Newsletter and College Anthem in the presence of other dignitaries and participants. The College Anthem was penned by noted poet Showkat Ahmed Sofi, popularly known as Sufi Showkat. The releases reflected the institution’s academic achievements, literary expression and cultural identity.

Addressing the gathering, the DC highlighted the enduring relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals, particularly truth and cleanliness, in shaping individual character and bringing about positive social transformation. She urged students to imbibe these values and practise them in their daily lives.

Speaking on the relevance of Gandhian philosophy in the digital age, Prof. Mohammad Ameen Parray highlighted the challenges of violence and non-violence on social media. He stressed the need for responsible digital behaviour, respectful communication and the promotion of truth and non-violence in online spaces.

On the occasion, Principal Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Jabeen underscored the importance of Gandhian values in fostering responsible, ethical and socially conscious citizens. She encouraged students to draw inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy and apply its principles to contemporary societal challenges.

The programme featured speeches by students from the participating colleges on various dimensions of Gandhian thought.

Later, at the conclusion of the speech competition, Majid of GDC Ajas secured the first position, while Saqib Rashid secured the second position and Toyiba Jan secured the third position. The position holders were presented with certificates and mementos in recognition of their performances.
