Srinagar, August 25, KDC: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Kashmir of the Crime Branch J&K has filed a charge-sheet against a man for allegedly cheating a family of lakhs of rupees by promising to arrange medicines at cheaper rates for a cancer patient.
The charge-sheet has been filed before the Court of the Sub-Judge, Srinagar, in connection with FIR No. 25/2026 registered under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The accused has been identified as Afaq Ahmad Thug, son of Ghulam Qadir, a resident of New Colony, Hazratbal, near Shiwala Mandir, Anantnag, presently residing at 10-Green Enclave, Barmuni Road, Sunjwan, Jammu.
According to the Crime Branch, the case was registered following a written complaint alleging that the accused had offered to arrange medicines for the complainant’s wife, who was suffering from cancer, at substantially cheaper rates.
Relying on the assurance, the complainant allegedly paid lakhs of rupees to the accused for procurement of the medicines. However, the accused allegedly failed to supply the medicines and did not fulfil his commitment despite receiving the money.
The EOW Kashmir subsequently initiated an investigation into the allegations. During the probe, the agency said the allegations were substantiated by evidence collected during the investigation.
The investigation also revealed that the accused and the complainant had been schoolmates at a boarding school more than four decades ago. According to the probe, their past association was relevant to the trust placed by the complainant in the accused.
After completing the investigation, the Crime Branch EOW Kashmir presented the charge-sheet before the competent court for judicial determination in accordance with law.
The agency clarified that filing of the charge-sheet marks the completion of its investigation, while the question of guilt or otherwise of the accused will be determined by the competent court.
Meanwhile, the Crime Branch has advised people to remain vigilant against economic frauds, particularly schemes involving promises of unusually cheap medicines or other financial inducements.
The agency urged the public to verify such claims before making payments and report suspicious financial activities or fraudulent transactions to the SSP, Economic Offences Wing Kashmir.
