Srinagar, August 13, KDC: The People’s Civil Society Jammu and Kashmir has condemned the reported threats and intimidation against members of the Kashmiri Pandit community, terming such acts “deeply unfortunate” and contrary to Kashmir’s pluralistic social fabric.
In a statement issued to news agency Kashmir Dot Com (KDC), the civil society said the Kashmiri Pandit community is “an inseparable part of Kashmir’s history, identity and collective heritage” and asserted that no individual, group or organisation should be allowed to threaten, intimidate or undermine the community’s sense of security, dignity and belonging.
“Political disagreements and ideological differences can never justify threats to the life, liberty or dignity of any citizen,” the statement said, adding that while differences of opinion have a place in a democratic society, “there can be no justification for using fear and intimidation as instruments of political expression.”
The People’s Civil Society said every Kashmiri, irrespective of religion, community or political belief, has the right to live with dignity and without fear.
It urged political parties, religious leaders and civil society groups to speak “clearly and consistently” against all forms of violence, intimidation and communal targeting.
“Those who threaten the life, liberty or property of any Kashmiri must understand that such actions only weaken the social fabric of our society,” it said.
The organisation stressed that the protection of Kashmiri Pandits should not be viewed as an act of charity or political favour, but as “a matter of rights, citizenship and collective responsibility.”
“The security, dignity and rightful place of Kashmiri Pandits in the social and cultural life of Kashmir is a responsibility shared by the entire society,” the statement said, adding that their history and contribution remain an integral part of Kashmir’s collective heritage.
It further called on political parties, civil society organisations, religious leaders and community representatives to rise above partisan considerations and speak unequivocally against threats, violence and communal intimidation.
“Political and ideological differences must be addressed through democratic and peaceful means. There can be no political legitimacy for threats to human life,” the statement said.
“The future of Kashmir must be shaped by dialogue, dignity, justice and mutual respect, not by fear,” it added.
The People’s Civil Society Jammu and Kashmir reaffirmed its commitment to a “plural, inclusive and peaceful Kashmir” in which every community enjoys equal rights, security and dignity. (KDC)
