Srinagar, Aug 6, KDC: Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed more than 35 cloudburst incidents so far this year, leaving 31 people dead and causing extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure across the Union Territory.
Official data shows that 22 cloudbursts were reported between June 1 and mid-July. Continued heavy rainfall during the second half of July and the beginning of August triggered several more incidents, taking the total number of reported cloudbursts to over 35.
Most of the fatalities have been attributed to cloudbursts, flash floods and rain-triggered landslides, with the Jammu division recording the highest number of deaths.
Among the worst-affected districts are Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua, Doda and Kishtwar, where multiple weather-related incidents caused significant loss of life and property. In the Kashmir Valley, Shopian and Kupwara have also witnessed repeated flash floods in recent weeks, damaging infrastructure and disrupting normal life.
The incidents have highlighted the growing impact of extreme weather events in the region, with authorities continuing restoration work and monitoring vulnerable areas amid the ongoing monsoon season. (KDC)
