Srinagar, June 13, KDC: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognisance of alleged incidents of harassment and attacks on Kashmiri shawl sellers and students in different parts of the country and registered a case on a complaint filed by the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA).
According to JKSA, the Commission has registered the matter under Case No. 684/90/0/2026 following a complaint submitted by the association regarding incidents of intimidation, harassment, discrimination and physical assaults allegedly faced by Kashmiri shawl sellers and students in several states.
The complaint, filed by JKSA National Convenor Nasir Khuehami, cited incidents reported from Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. It alleged that some Kashmiri shawl sellers were assaulted, threatened and prevented from carrying out their trade, while several students reported incidents of denial of accommodation, intimidation and threats.
The association said the NHRC had earlier acknowledged the complaint and assigned it Diary No. 4836/CR/2026 before registering the case.
According to JKSA, the Commission is expected to seek reports from the concerned state governments and police authorities on the incidents highlighted in the complaint, including the status of FIRs, arrests made and measures taken to ensure the safety of Kashmiri students and traders.
The association expressed hope that the Commission would examine the matter and recommend appropriate measures to safeguard the rights and security of Kashmiri citizens residing and working outside Jammu and Kashmir. (KDC)
