Srinagar, May 22, KDC: Allegations of unethical trade practices at the Fruit Mandi Sopore have triggered official intervention from the Directorate of Horticulture Planning and Marketing, with authorities directing immediate corrective measures and warning of action against violators.
According to Kashmir Dot Com, the development follows a representation submitted by the North Kashmir Fruit Growers Association highlighting alleged irregularities affecting growers operating in Asia’s major fruit trading hub at Sopore. Growers alleged that traders and commission agents were charging unjustified commissions, making arbitrary deductions under miscellaneous heads and creating barriers that financially burden small and marginal farmers.
The growers’ body also raised concerns regarding insufficient auction platform space for progressive farmers seeking direct sale opportunities and alleged that non-issuance of mandi licences to farmer communities was contributing to monopolistic practices in the market.
Following the representation, the Directorate of Horticulture Planning and Marketing issued directions to the Area Marketing Officer, Horticulture Planning and Marketing Sopore, asking authorities to examine the concerns and ensure that any malpractice in trade activities is immediately stopped. Officials were also directed to ensure that no unauthorized commission is charged from farmers and that transparent trade practices are maintained in the mandi.
The communication further directed field functionaries to initiate appropriate action against individuals found indulging in unauthorized activities or trade malpractices and submit an action taken report to the Directorate.
Sources said the instructions had been passed on by the Director, Horticulture Planning and Marketing, while the communication was formally signed by the Assistant Director (Administration) on the Director’s behalf.
When contacted, Director Horticulture Planning and Marketing, Geelani Zargar said traders and commission agents had been asked to follow legal and ethical practices in the larger interest of trade.
“Commission agents and traders have been directed to adhere to legal and ethical trade practices in the best interest of the horticulture sector. Any violations or malpractice will invite action against defaulters,” the Director said.
The intervention assumes significance as the horticulture sector remains a key pillar of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, with Sopore Fruit Mandi serving as one of the region’s largest trading centres for apple and other horticultural produce. (KDC)
