Sopore, May 11, KDC: Sopore Police has intensified its multi-pronged campaign against drug trafficking and substance abuse under the ongoing 100-Day Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan, registering significant achievements across the police district since the launch of the initiative on April 11, 2026.
As part of the sustained anti-drug operations, Sopore Police has so far registered 22 FIRs under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arrested 23 drug peddlers allegedly involved in narcotics trafficking and related illegal activities.
During various raids and operations conducted across the district, police recovered more than five kilograms of narcotic substances, besides seizing thousands of psychotropic capsules and tablets along with 21 bottles of Codeine Syrup. The total value of the seized contraband has been estimated at over Rs 40 lakh in the illegal market.
In a major preventive action against repeat offenders, seven habitual drug peddlers were booked under the PIT NDPS Act after obtaining detention orders from the competent authority. The accused were subsequently lodged in jails outside the Kashmir Valley.
Police also initiated security proceedings against 170 suspected narco elements across the district as part of efforts to dismantle local drug networks and prevent repeat offences.
To strengthen enforcement on the ground, Sopore Police carried out eight hotspot-based anti-narcotics Cordon and Search Operations (CASOs) and conducted 41 raids at suspected locations linked to drug trafficking.
In coordination with the Drug Control Department, extensive inspections were conducted at chemist shops and pharmacies across the district to check illegal sale and misuse of prescription medicines.
During the campaign, authorities inspected 257 chemist shops and pharmacies and detected 20 violations under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and related regulations. Following the inspections, 11 medical stores were sealed, while licences of several violators were suspended or cancelled by the Drug Control authorities.
Strong action was also initiated against illegal cultivation of narcotic crops in the district. During joint anti-poppy cultivation drives conducted with the Excise, Agriculture and Revenue Departments, illegal poppy cultivation was destroyed at five locations.
Police said four FIRs were also registered under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act in connection with illegal cultivation activities.
Officials said the anti-drug campaign will continue with intensified enforcement, preventive detention measures, awareness programmes and community participation to eliminate the drug menace from society. (KDC)
