Srinagar, Apr 3, KDC: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Jammu & Kashmir, has presented a charge-sheet before the competent court against two public servants in connection with a bribery trap case registered in Baramulla district.
The accused have been identified as Altaf Hussain Khan, then Naib Tehsildar Uri, and Pardeep Kumar, Patwari Halqa Uri. The charge-sheet has been filed in FIR No. 12/2024 of Police Station ACB Baramulla.
According to ACB, a complaint was received from a resident of Uri on September 11, 2023, alleging that after purchasing land measuring 10 marlas and constructing a house, he approached the Tehsil office Uri for requisite revenue documents due to a dispute with the seller. The complainant alleged that the accused officials demanded a bribe of ₹10 lakh, which was later negotiated to ₹1 lakh, for furnishing the required documents.
Refusing to pay the bribe, the complainant approached Police Station ACB Baramulla with a written complaint seeking legal action. Following verification of the allegations, a case was registered and a trap was laid.
During the operation, Altaf Hussain Khan was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹50,000 from the complainant. The tainted money was recovered from his possession, and he was arrested on the spot. He was subsequently remanded to police and judicial custody from time to time by the court.
The investigation, ACB said, prima facie established the involvement of both accused, including the role of Patwari Pardeep Kumar, based on evidence collected during the probe.
Upon completion of the investigation and after obtaining the requisite prosecution sanction from the Government of Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, the ACB filed the charge-sheet against both accused under Section 7 and Section 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, read with Section 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), before the Special Judge, Anti-Corruption Court, Baramulla.
The court has fixed May 2, 2026, as the next date of hearing in the case.
ACB officials said this is the seventh charge-sheet filed in 2026 by Police Station ACB Baramulla before the Special Judge in different corruption cases. (KDC)
