Srinagar, Dec 19: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti has filed a formal complaint seeking the registration of an FIR against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for allegedly pulling aside the face veil of a Muslim woman doctor during a government function.
In her complaint, Iltija termed the act a grave violation of personal dignity, bodily autonomy and religious freedom, asserting that it attracts offences under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Constitution. She said the incident, which occurred at a public event, was humiliating for the woman concerned and conveyed a disturbing message about the treatment of women and minorities by those in power.
The complaint notes that the doctor, an AYUSH practitioner who was receiving an appointment letter, appeared visibly taken aback as the Chief Minister allegedly proceeded without her consent. Iltija Mufti maintained that such conduct by a constitutional authority cannot be dismissed as inadvertent, particularly when it involves interference with personal attire rooted in faith and individual choice.
Calling the incident an abuse of authority, the PDP leader urged law-enforcement agencies to act impartially and uphold the rule of law, stressing that accountability must apply equally, irrespective of political position.
The incident, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, has triggered nationwide outrage and drawn condemnation from opposition parties and civil society groups. The Bihar Chief Minister and his party are yet to issue an official response.
