Jammu & Kashmir is quietly scripting one of India’s strongest public health success stories — a story driven by scale, resolve, and relentless grassroots action. At the heart of this transformation is the National Health Mission (NHM) J&K, which has turned the national TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan into a dynamic, community-led movement.

Under the leadership of Mission Director Baseer-ul-Haq Choudhary, IAS, the UT’s fight against tuberculosis has gone far beyond official directives. It has become a collective effort reaching every home, village, and high-altitude settlement.

What sets J&K apart is not just the ambition of its anti-TB campaign, but its speed and reach. Over the last two years, health teams have travelled across mountains, dense urban clusters, nomadic routes, and remote tribal belts — places where healthcare access has historically been difficult.

The impact is visible.
More than 5.25 lakh people were screened in 2024–25, and another 2.59 lakh so far this year. This aggressive push for early detection has been a turning point, allowing health workers to identify infections early and break chains of transmission.

A strengthened diagnostic network has become the backbone of this mission. District and sub-district hospitals are now equipped with high-speed CBNAAT and TrueNat machines, while digital X-ray units and portable testing tools are reaching snow-bound regions where health services are often hindered by weather. Geography is no longer a barrier to accurate TB detection in J&K.

But technology alone does not win battles — people do.
The Nikshay ecosystem has become a lifeline for thousands of TB patients. Through Nikshay Mitras, patients receive nutritional support, counselling, and regular follow-up. Financial aid under Nikshay Poshan Yojana is reaching families on time, ensuring treatment continues uninterrupted.

At the centre of this network are ASHA workers — the unsung heroes trekking miles each day to ensure patients adhere to their medication. Their quiet persistence is preventing both relapse and drug-resistant TB.

The campaign is being driven by strong administrative oversight. Regular reviews by the Chief Secretary and the Lieutenant Governor keep districts focused and accountable. Under the guidance of the MD NHM, targets are clear and timelines strict, resulting in one of India’s most coordinated TB elimination operations.

Equally important is the rise of a social movement around TB awareness. Health melas, school engagement, panchayat meetings, religious outreach, and impactful social media messaging are reshaping public attitudes. The message is clear: TB is preventable, curable, and testing is essential. Breaking stigma is half the battle — and J&K is winning it by bringing conversations directly to communities.

The result is a TB elimination model now drawing national attention. In a region known for extreme terrain and climatic unpredictability, NHM J&K has demonstrated what determined leadership, empowered frontline workers, and active community participation can achieve together.

As India marches towards a TB-free future, Jammu & Kashmir stands as a powerful example of what is possible when a health mission becomes a people’s movement. This is not just a story of disease control — it is a story of vision, courage, and a UT determined to defeat tuberculosis once and for all.
