Baramulla, November 1: The Department of Tuberculosis & Respiratory Medicine, Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla, under the esteemed patronage of Principal Prof. (Dr) Majid Jehangir, on Saturday organized a CME-cum-Hands-on Workshop on “Advanced Lung Function Assessment.” The event was held in collaboration with the PURE Foundation, Pune.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr) Majid Jehangir, Principal GMC Baramulla, in presence of Prof. (Dr) Shafqat Ahmad Lone, Registrar Academics; Dr. Parvaiz Masoodi, Medical Superintendent; Dr. Shumail Bashir, Associate Professor & Head, Department of TB & Respiratory Medicine; and eminent pulmonologists Dr. Sundeep Salvi and Dr. Deesha Ghorpade, who served as course directors.

In her welcome address, Dr. Shumail Bashir, Organising Chairperson, underlined the growing importance of advanced pulmonary diagnostic tools in improving patient outcomes. In his keynote address, Prof. (Dr) Jehangir highlighted that given the high burden of respiratory diseases in Kashmir’s cold climate, it is imperative for medical institutions to adopt sophisticated diagnostic technologies for early detection and precision management of respiratory ailments.

The scientific sessions covered a wide range of topics, including Spirometry (Dr. Aqeel Hussain), FeNO—Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (Dr. Shumail Bashir), Lung Oscillometry with Pediatric Focus (Dr. Deesha Ghorpade), and DLCO & Body Plethysmography (Dr. Sundeep Salvi). The lectures were followed by an extensive hands-on component, allowing participants to gain practical exposure to state-of-the-art lung function testing equipment and interpretation techniques.

The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty, postgraduate residents, and medical students. Distinguished experts such as Prof. (Dr) Naveed Nazir Shah, Head, Chest Diseases Hospital Srinagar, and Prof. (Dr) Sonaullah Shah, Head, Department of Medicine, SKIMS Soura, also graced the occasion and shared their insights on evolving respiratory diagnostics and public health challenges in the region.

The day-long event concluded with a vote of thanks by the organising committee, who expressed gratitude to all speakers, guests, and participants for making the academic exercise a success. The workshop was widely appreciated as a milestone initiative in upgrading clinical skills and promoting evidence-based respiratory medicine in Jammu and Kashmir.
