Srinagar, Oct 31, KDC: The Jammu and Kashmir government has said it is considering the revival of the Self Help Group (SHG) scheme for unemployed engineering graduates, which was abolished in 2020.
In response to a question raised by MLA Ch. Mohammad Akram in the Assembly, the government as per Kashmir Dot Com stated that the practice of reserving a proportion of works or projects for Self Help Groups of Engineers was discontinued following Administrative Council Decision No. 102/15/2020 dated August 4, 2020.
However, the government confirmed that the revival of the SHG of Engineers scheme is presently under consideration.
The SHG scheme, launched in 2003, aimed to provide employment opportunities to unemployed engineers by allotting a percentage of government works to registered groups. Its abolition in 2020 had triggered widespread protests and appeals from unemployed youth across Jammu and Kashmir, who argued that the decision deprived them of a crucial livelihood opportunity.
The latest statement indicates a possible policy shift, rekindling hopes among thousands of qualified engineers awaiting government intervention to address the growing unemployment crisis in the technical sector. (KDC)
