Srinagar, Oct 29, KDC: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Budgam by-elections, Aga Syed Mohsin, has lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) against Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
The complaint, submitted before the Chief Election Commissioner in New Delhi, alleges that Omar Abdullah made an announcement during the proceedings of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly earlier on Wednesday regarding the commencement of temporary classes for the proposed National Law University (NLU) at Ompura in Budgam district, reported news agency Kashmir Dot Com.
According to Mohsin, this announcement, made from the floor of the House, has been “widely circulated on media and social platforms” and is being viewed as an attempt to influence the electorate in Budgam, where the by-election process is currently underway.
“The Chief Minister’s remarks amount to offering developmental promises in a constituency under election, which is a clear breach of the Model Code of Conduct,” the BJP candidate stated in his complaint.
Mohsin urged the Election Commission to take immediate cognizance of the alleged violation and initiate appropriate action against the Chief Minister.
The controversy stems from Omar Abdullah’s statement in the Assembly earlier in the day, where he said the National Law University would begin functioning by April next year, with temporary classes to be held at Ompura, Budgam, until a permanent campus is established.
The Election Commission has not yet issued any response to the complaint. (KDC)
