Srinagar, Oct 29, KDC: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Wednesday accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by announcing the opening of National Law University (NLU) classes in Budgam, where the by-election process is currently underway.
Speaking to reporters outside the Legislative Assembly, Sharma, according to news agency Kashmir Dot Com, said the Chief Minister’s announcement on the floor of the House regarding the commencement of NLU classes at Ompura, Budgam, was a clear breach of election guidelines.
“On the floor of the House, Omar Abdullah Sahib gave assurance to open the classes of the National Law University in Budgam, which is against the Model Code of Conduct,” Sharma said. “For this mistake, he should resign on moral grounds.”
The BJP leader said the party would formally approach the Election Commission of India (ECI) seeking action against the Chief Minister. “If the Chief Minister does not step down, the BJP will file a complaint with the Election Commission and demand strict action,” he added.
Questioning the legality of the Chief Minister’s announcement, Sharma said, “What right does he have to make such decisions when the Model Code of Conduct is in place? The Chief Minister cannot ignore the directions of the Election Commission of India.”
The remarks came a day after Omar Abdullah, during an Assembly session, said the proposed National Law University in Jammu and Kashmir would begin functioning by April next year and may temporarily operate from a rented campus at Ompura in Budgam. (KDC)
