Srinagar, Oct 20, KDC: After the Congress declined to contest the Nagrota constituency, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) on Monday announced District Development Council (DDC) member Shamim Begum as its candidate for the upcoming Assembly elections.
NC’s Provincial President for Jammu, Rattan Lal Gupta, said the party high command had cleared her name and that she would file her nomination papers soon.
A Muslim Gujjar woman, Shamim Begum had earlier won the 2020 DDC elections from Nagrota.
The Congress, citing “larger interests” and the goal of defeating the BJP, said it decided to leave the seat to its ally NC, following consultations with its state and central leadership.
The development comes amid strained ties between the NC and Congress, particularly after disagreements over seat-sharing for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. (KDC)
