Srinagar, Sept 27, KDC: Police in Magam area of Central Kashmir’s Budgam have arrested three individuals, including two teenage students, for their alleged involvement in circulating Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN). The arrests were made during a routine operation after credible inputs about suspicious monetary dealings in the area.
A senior police officer told Kashmir Dot Com said the accused include a 37-year-old man from Mazhama Magam in Budgam and two students, both aged 17, hailing from Budgam district.
During the operation, police recovered counterfeit notes worth ₹27,500 from one of the students, while fake currency amounting to ₹5,500 was seized from the other. The total recovery from the trio stood at ₹33,000 in FICNs.
The officer said further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the counterfeit currency and determine whether the arrested individuals were part of a larger network. “We are probing how the notes reached them and whether more people are involved in the circulation racket,” he said.
The arrest of two students has raised concern among locals, who urged authorities to create awareness among the youth about the serious consequences of engaging in such illegal activities. Residents said the easy availability of counterfeit notes not only harms the economy but also risks drawing impressionable youth into criminal networks.
Police have registered a case at Police Station Magam, and further questioning of the accused is in progress. Officials added that strict action will be taken against those found guilty of spreading counterfeit currency in the district. (KDC)
