Srinagar, Sep 4, KDC: In view of the ongoing flood-like situation and heavy waterlogging in parts of Srinagar, the District Police has launched a major evacuation and relocation drive to safeguard lives, in close coordination with SDRF and River Police.

According to a handout issued by Srinagar Police to Kashmir Dot Com, nearly 200 families and individuals have been rescued and shifted to safer locations from various vulnerable areas across the district.

As per details, 24 families and houseboat dwellers were relocated from Peerzo Island and Basantbagh; 39 families from Bonyarbal, S.R. Gunj, Malik Sahib, Safakdal, Pamposh Colony, Noorbagh, Guzarbal and Madanyar Fateh Kadal; 20 families from Dedi Kadal, Habba Kadal, Zaindar Mohalla, Tankipora, Karan Nagar, Kursoo, Iqbal Colony and Aramwari; another 20 families from Tailbal and Hazratbal areas; while 63 individuals were rescued from Panzinara–Mujgund, Bund side areas of Maloora, Khawajabagh, Parimpora, Bilal Colony, Qamarwari, Rampora Chattabal, Zenpora and Tengan.

In addition, Srinagar Police said it has identified and plugged potential breaches in embankments to prevent further escalation of the situation. Contingency teams and QRTs have also been formed across all police establishments to assist stranded citizens, regulate traffic in congested areas and provide frontline rescue support.

The District Police has also established 24×7 dedicated helplines, besides publishing official numbers of all officers to extend timely assistance. Citizens have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall, report waterlogging, fallen trees or electric hazards to the nearest police station, and strictly follow advisories.

“Citizens facing emergencies are encouraged to contact the helplines or official numbers of District Police Officers, which are operational round-the-clock,” the handout stated. (KDC)
