SRINAGAR, SEPT 04: Nearly 9,000 people have been evacuated from affected areas of Budgam following a breach in the Jhelum embankment, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, said on Thursday. He assured that the situation is under control as water levels are gradually receding.
“Some areas of Budgam were inundated, but as a precautionary measure, we carried out evacuations last night itself. Around 9,000 people were safely shifted to avoid any loss of life,” Garg told reporters.
He said that weather conditions have improved since last night, with water levels at key spots including Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh showing a downward trend. Preventive evacuations are also being undertaken in parts of Srinagar, particularly low-lying areas like Lasjan.
Rescue teams from SDRF, NDRF, Police, and local administration remain on the ground, ensuring coordinated efforts. Garg added that the Irrigation and Flood Control Department is continuously monitoring and strengthening embankments to reduce pressure at vulnerable spots.
He stressed that essential services including food supplies, electricity, and communication remain unaffected across the Valley. “There is no need for panic. My request to people is to stay calm, follow advisories, and in case of any emergency, contact the district administration on the numbers already circulated,” he said.
