In the complex landscape of Jammu and Kashmir’s law and order, few names command the respect and admiration that Vidhi Kumar Birdi does. Currently serving as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Kashmir, Mr. Birdi has built a reputation as a steadfast and visionary officer—one who leads not only with authority, but with empathy, dedication, and an unshakable commitment to justice.
Over the years, he has served in some of the most challenging terrains and assignments, and his career has been marked by professionalism, strategic acumen, and a nuanced understanding of the region’s socio-political sensitivities. Under his leadership, Kashmir has seen strengthened law enforcement mechanisms, community-focused policing, and a firm stance against threats to public peace—all while upholding the rights and dignity of the people.
On a personal note, my connection with Birdi dates back to his tenure as SSP Kupwara, a crucial post in one of North Kashmir’s most sensitive districts. My father had the honor of serving as his reader during that time—a role that allowed him to witness firsthand the calibre of this remarkable officer. He often speaks of Mr. Birdi’s integrity, humility, and tireless dedication to public service. Whether it was quick redressal of public grievances or his unwavering focus on duty, Mr. Birdi consistently stood out as a beacon of honesty and professionalism.
Mr. Birdi has played a pivotal role in ensuring peace in the region, navigating Kashmir’s complexities with composure and clarity. What truly sets him apart is his accessibility to the public. Whether during times of tension or calm, he has always been at the forefront, addressing the concerns of ordinary Kashmiris with sincerity and urgency. His open-door approach and willingness to listen have helped build trust between the people and the police, reinvigorating public faith in law enforcement institutions.
Those who have worked closely with him often highlight not just his operational competence, but his human touch. He is approachable, fair, and driven by a genuine concern for the welfare of others. Officers and civilians alike feel heard and respected in his presence—a rare and invaluable quality that continues to define his leadership style to this day.
As IGP Kashmir, Vidhi Kumar Birdi continues to carry forward this legacy. In an era marked by uncertainty and transition, he remains a steady guiding force—leading the region toward greater stability, security, and progress. His leadership inspires not only those in uniform but also countless civilians who long for leaders who lead by example.
In times when public trust in institutions is more vital than ever, officers like Birdi remind us that integrity, dedication, and compassion remain the true hallmarks of public service.
