Srinagar, Mar 24, KDC: MLA Pulwama Waheed Para on Monday raised concerns in the Assembly over the impact of substandard pesticides on Kashmir’s farmers and the apple industry, calling for strict quality control measures.
Highlighting significant losses in crop yield and quality, particularly in the apple sector, Para urged the government to establish an Enforcement Directorate within the Horticulture Department to regulate pesticide use and protect farmers.
While discussing grants for the horticulture and agriculture departments, he stressed the need for policies that prioritize farmers’ welfare, including access to quality agricultural inputs, sustainable practices, and fair pricing. He also called for training programs on pesticide safety and accountability for those selling substandard chemicals.
Para concluded by advocating long-term solutions to sustain J&K’s agricultural sector and safeguard farmers’ livelihoods. (KDC)
