SRINAGAR: Kupwara’s PDP MLA Fayaz Ahmad Mir has introduced a private member’s bill seeking a complete ban on liquor in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The bill is scheduled for discussion in the upcoming budget session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, commencing on March 3 in Jammu.
This session marks the first under the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference government, which assumed office last October after six years of central rule.
Mir has proposed stringent penalties, including imprisonment and fines, for those violating the proposed prohibition. Citing concerns over the increasing alcohol consumption in the region, he stated the need for strong legislation to mitigate potential societal harm.
